Straight Talk About LGBTQ* Lives: Working with LGBTQ Individuals and Families in Professional Settings
A Pre-Conference Provider Training Day
RIT Inn and Conference Center, Rochester, NY
Friday, April 8, 2011
Please join us and your colleagues in the health and human services fields for an inspiring day of training on working effectively with members of the LGBTQ community…
AIDS Care, the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, the Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project, Rainbow SAGE of the Genesee Valley, and Visit Rochester will offer a day-long cultural competency training for educators, medical providers and other health and human service professionals on the subject of LGBTQ individuals and families. Straight Talk About LGBTQ Lives: Working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Individuals and Families in Professional Settings, will be held in conjunction with the 2011 Pride and Joy Families Weekend Conference on Friday, April 8, 2011 at the RIT Inn and Conference Center, 5257 W. Henrietta Road, Rochester.
The purpose of the training is two-fold: to inform providers about the barriers to healthcare and other services faced by LGBTQ individuals and their families, and to improve the ability of providers to respond to this population with sensitivity, inclusiveness and a greater depth of understanding of their issues and needs.
The Training Day will include a morning keynote speaker, a lunch-time plenary session featuring a diverse group of LGBTQ individuals speaking about their experiences with schools, mental health, medical, and other institutions, and afternoon workshops specifically tailored to professionals in the fields of medicine/ healthcare, foster/adoption services, aging services, education/children and youth services, and mental health and other human services.
Attendees will leave with greater knowledge and understanding of their LGBTQ students/clients/patients/ colleagues and with a concrete set of best practices to implement in their offices and educational institutions. Students and pre-service professionals will also be welcome to attend.
*lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer members.
The Need
The need for increased inclusiveness and cultural competency is well documented. In a finding consistent across healthcare studies, LGBT people report having more negative interactions with their doctors and being less satisfied with the care they receive than their heterosexual counterparts (LGBT Health and Human Services Needs in New York State, Somjen Frazer, 2009). In a recent survey of school children with LGBT parents, nearly one-fifth reported hearing negative remarks about having LGBT parents from other students, while nearly one-third heard such comments made by school staff (Involved, Invisible, Ignored: The Experiences of LGBT Parents and Their Children in Our Nation’s K-12 Schools, GLSEN, 2008).
Participants will…
-learn about health disparities and barriers to healthcare and other services faced by LGBTQ individuals and their families
-improve their ability to respond to this population with sensitivity, inclusiveness, and a greater depth of understanding
-leave with a concrete set of best practices to implement in their offices and educational institutions
